Greeting cards assignment.

During Hari raya break, Ms Maslisa called us to send our sketches on 3 themes then she'll choose one of the theme for us. At first, my themes was wedding proposal,  but Ms Maslisa said she dun like it so I change it to sun rise. For my options,  sun rise represents hope. At the same time, I was thinking about make something ordinary on the binding and display part. So I've made something like floating notes and Ms Maslisa approved.  But at the end I only use that technique for 1 card, not all of them. I'm regret of it. From this assignment it reminds me I should me more alert on details and instructions,  if not, I'll lose all my marks.

Final Project: Final week (Final selection of 5/ Rationale)

Chia Kha Wen (born November 1996, Malaysia) studying Foundation in Design in Taylors University Lakeside Campus. I get the intrest of Photography from my father who passion about photography. Futhermore, I choose Introduction to Photography as my elective course in this semester because I was curious and wanted know more about my father who loved Photography a lot and I tried to over my limit to learn more skills. For a certaim people, capture a picture is just because the scenario was nice or just wanted to show off to others that you had been there. But for me, capture a photo it can frozen that timing, record or to memorize something that memorable to you. In a certain timing stages, some people might hope that could freeze the time to enjoy last longer time, that included me. As my topic, Village, was something that I hope I could freeze back that moments. The moments that my grandfather still alive and keep helping me. My grandfather was the one who take care and able spend more time with me then my parents. On that time, we lived in a Chinese village singing and dance together while on the way to kindergarden school. Through the rise of improvement in technology, Chinese village had a sudden fall, so we moved to a neightbour hood. After few weeks we had moved, my grandfather was pass away. As you can see in my series, I had found my toddle memorise through the environment of the chinese village.

Reflection:

Observation: On today's lesson, I had observed that I am count as the only textile learner in my class. During the lesson, Mr Vinod talked about our Learning Style Inventory test which concluded to three type, visual, textile, and auditory learner. I am a textile learner which same with Mr Vinod. Textile learner cannot focus or learning through just lecture, it minds will thinking other stuff then focus on lecture. I am totally agree I am a textile learner, I cannot learn in such a boring lecture section.

Experience: First time go in a photo studio in my whole life, feel excited that we will learn all the stuff in photo studio.

Presentation: Studio Photography Portraits

Feedback: the shots for this week, were about the same as last week. The shot of the house, Mr Vinod think the 3 shot was composed well. The other shots seems to lack a point of interest, that's why composition suffered. The exposure was a little dull, lacking in a little bit of contrast perhaps, but it is still acceptable as I can edit them in photoshop later, to increase contrast. Right now, I must shoot some more, in so that you can identify, good subjects and re shoot them if necessary and try to capture well composed images with strong points of interest.

Reflection:

Observation: On today's lesson, I observed that photo studio was very clean and tidy. Although the outlook  was a small room but there's many things that we need to know and learned. While shooting section, I realized that lightning was important. Moreover, to get a good-lightning studio photograph needs a lot of people to cooperate and helping.

Experience: During the shooting section, I get a motive to in-charge those light position. Those light was super heavy, I get easily unbalanced while moving the light.

Reflection:

Observation: Currently we just had a discussion about our final project for today's lesson. Each of us had to talked about what we wanted or selection of topic. Though the discussion, I observed that the topic that everyone had research for the final project that relate to some part of ourself. Most of the photographer's photograph had a connection to their background, which I found it was very cool that have a very unique and owned photograph style.

Experience: On today's discussion, I had share my topics that I choose for my self to my course mates which is the photograph of transparent bottles and village. After I had describe both of the topics to my course mates and Mr Vinod, Mr Vinod gave me a feedback that he like my village photograph idea and this was my first choice for the topic of final project. The reason I choose village is because my house nearby a village which quite modernized, it was something like village of 80s or 90s. On another hand, I wished to do this topic because it considered as my last memory of my dear grandfather who takes more care and spend the most time with me since I was born then my parents. My grandfather was a chef of a village in Seremban when he was young before, but he retired when I was born. As a return, I planed to do something that related to him.

Finding: While doing the exercise at the village, I tried to capture something that Mr Vinod suggested to me which is old-fashioned slippers. But I found it was hard because those white slippers with blue stripes at the side was hardly found nowadays, what I could manage found was Birkenstock and Corcs.

Reflection:

Observation:  On this week exercise, I tried to take something more details and nearer photographs. Last week most of my photograph was landscaped dun have any details version.

Experience: I get scolded by the owner of the house while I'm shooting his house, he though I was a robbery or something else. At the same time I kept explaining that I'm just a student, and I need to capture some photo for my assignment. He finally stop arguing and apologized to me when I show him my student ID.

Paper cafting assignment

In the beginning of this assignment, Ms Msslisa told us to find a theme and do 2 design related to the theme, symmetry and asymmetric . During the sketching time, I was totally no idea about what am I going to do and what's my theme was, because my mood was down when I know my video assignment's mark dun have reach my expectation. After doing some research on google,  I had an idea on sketching an apple with flowers for my symmetry and I had asked Ms Maslisa to approve. Her opinion was that idea is too simple, she expect something different from me. The days after, I get inspired by my violin. I learned violin before, but after few month I had stop it due to spm exam is around the corner. I wanted to do something for my violin, to remind me that I had learn before and the passion super loving on it during that time. For symmetry I done it with the whole violin body shape with patterns pop up. As for asymmetric,  I done it with a big tree, under the big tree got a girl playing her cello.

During crafting process,  I maintained the same slow speed to craft out the papers instead of using fast speed to craft. It is because if you using fast speed, it will ruins your design and you have to redraw and craft again. This considered as my first time doing paper crafting.  It was fun but hard on crafting curve lines. It needs a good passion to finish up.

My art work was shown on below:

Composition

On today class, a A4 size mounting  board and a phone or camera (that you can record a video)was needed. My and my course mate was guessing what we are going to do on class, mostly was record a video. At first, Miss Maslisa gave us a lecture on composition which the points was same as Mr Vinod's class, Photography class. After the lecture, Miss Maslisa showed us some previous students small video which we are going to do next. Next, we were required to do a frame (by cutting the middle rectangle part). At the same time, choose a subject material to work with. The instruction of the assignment is capture 30 images (the frame must be inside the screen) and made it into a slide show.

My subject material which Miss Maslisa choose for me was candy. After chosen the subject material for each one of us, we had 1 hour to try to capture the image with subject material and the frame. During that 1 hour, I realised that my candy must more than 1 only will have the effect. So, I went to jusco in Sunway pyramid to shop for candy. It was my first time to shop for candy, because usually I dislike sweet things, if not I will not shop for that. I spent RM20 for 10 pack different kinds of candy.

During weekend, I spent around 5 hours to capture the images at my house. I felt fun, enjoy and adventure while doing this assignment, because it was my first time to do a stop motion. Moreover on these images that I had capture,I was trying to make it looks adorable. Form my point of  view, it did not cover it all but got some parts was related to it. That is why I am putting a Korean song as the background music. For me, this Korean song was very cute and when I was doing this video, I was thinking this video might can be a confess or a valentines video too. At the end, I choose 38 images for my video

Because of this assignment, finally I know how to do a video by using movie maker. It was cool and amazed (because I was sucks on any electronic device). By doing these assignment, I get to know more that laptop was not only for internet, it can do a lot of things other than that. Thanks to all lecture who bringing us to a new world.

Photoshop - edit your selfie

Lecture:  For today class, we start learning edit pictures by using Adobe Photoshop. At first, because we all did not read the link that Mr Vinod gave us. So, the discussion was cancelled. Since the discussion was cancelled, Mr Vinod started to teach us how to use photoshop for edit picture. After that, we apply the technique that we just learn on our selfie and then use it as facebook profile picture for the whole semester.

Instruction:
1. Edit your selfie by using Adobe Photoshop.
2. Use it as Facebook profile picture.

Original

After edit

Reflection:
Experience- On today lesson, it remind me my high school life. I had learnt Adobe Photoshop when I was 14 and 15 years old, it was IT class, it is a compulsary subject which everyone must learn it. Plus, I joined journalism club. We used Photoshop to design our school magazine, when I heard from Mr Vinod that Photoshop is only edit photo and I shocked because I used that design a lot of thing on high school. I had stop using Photoshop for 2 years, todays class was a recall for me. At the same time, it was my first time edit pictures, because I dun use Photoshop to edit ownself picture before, I only edit cartoons.

Observation- On today lesson, I observed some technique on Photoshop that I did not use before. Like change the picture to black and white and adjust the zone system. Moreover, Mr Vinod demonstrate us on how to edit a self portrait at the same time he teach us the function of the tools in Photoshop. Nonetheless, I feel that edit self portrait was hard, maybe is that I had stoped Photoshop long time ago. Now, my brain just remember a few tools but not much, and all the skill i had learnt before was gone.

Finding- Based on the experience and observation above, I enjoy using Photoshop. Firstly, I had done these before although I had forgot most technique of them. Second, I had fun on using the tools and made something different then the original one. I will continue to use it for editing to recall back my memories.

Introduction to photography (week 8)

23.5.2014 (Week 8)

Presentation: Photo Editing and Consistency

Lecture:
In this week, we learnt something different then last few week, Consistency. Before the class, Mr Vinod gave us some link to refer it. During the lecture, Mr Vinod show us some pictures with different topics. It was amazed and beautiful. At the same time, we had a small discussion on consistency in the class. Mr Vinod said that we will learn more on edit photo on next week (week 9). At the end of class, Mr Vinod want us to take a selfie, before next class and without editing. For next week lesson, laptop is needed for the lesson.

Instructions:
1. Have our selfies done by Friday, by using two different devices (phone and DSLR)
2. Bring laptop on next lesson
3. Complete ePortfolio.

Reflection:
Experience- From the lecture, I did not understand well on this week topics. Because on that day only have lecture and no exercise given. I found that it was hard to understand the topic without exercise. From my opinion, learning process should be refer to exercise or practise. From what you can observe and experience you know more about it.

Observation-From the pictures that Mr Vinod showed to us, I observe nice and well edited pictures. While during discussion, we search other topics that Mr Vinod did not show to us. Those pictures was amazed ! From all the topics, the one stuck on my mind was children portrait. As what Mr Vinod said that taking children portrait was hard because kids are hyper, they cannot stay their quietly for few minutes to let you set those manual setting.

Findings- Based on reflection and observation, I cannot wait to attend the next class. Although mu skill on DSLR was still not so good, but I more interest on editing pictures then taking pictures. Moreover, I found out that be a photographers must be brave enough because while taking some pictures, the position of the photographer will slightly awkward in order to get a good angel for a good result.

Introduction to Photography (Week 6/7, Exercise 4a and 4b)

9th May 2014 / 16th May 2014 (Week 6/7)
Chia Kha Wen (0319625)
Exercise 4a (Rule of Third) and 4b (Principles underpinning composition)

Lecture:
On this lesson, we learnt a new topic, composition. Using the Rule of Thirds comes natural to some photographers but for many of us. It takes a little time and practise for it to become second nature. The rule of thirds is probably the most often referenced photography rule of composition. The photography rule of thirds tells us to align our subject with one of the points where those lines cross. That means our subject is one third of the way into the picture space from either the top or bottom, and from either the left or right. In conclusion, it's not in the middle.

There are 4 type of composition in photography which is rules of third, counterpoint, triangular composition and multipoint. Apart from the already mentioned rules that govern or guide composition there are also principles of design that underpin composition. These principles can also be used when composing or considering elements within a picture. The principles are: Domination / Emphasis / Isolation / Balance / Repetition / Alignment / Contrast / Rhythm / Symmetry / Asymmetry / Harmony.

Instruction for exercise 4a:
~Capture 3 images adhering to the rule of third:
-1 person
-3 persons
-1 scenery
-Use what you have learned in the Zone system exercises here.

1 person:
ISO- 200
shutter speed- 1/4
aperture- f14

3 persons:
ISO- 200
shutter speed- 1/13
aperture- f5

Scenery:
ISO- 200
Shutter speed- 1/13
aperture- f9

Instruction for exercise 4b:
~Capture 4 images adhering any 4 of them (Domination / Emphasis / Isolation / Balance / Repetition / Alignment / Contrast / Rhythm / Symmetry / Asymmetry / Harmony.)

Contrast:
ISO- 640
Shutter speed- 1/10
aperture- f2.8

Symmetry:
ISO-400
Shutter speed- 1/6
aperture- f6.3

Repetition:
ISO- 400
Shutter speed- 1/6
aperture- f6.3

Perspective:
ISO- 400
Shutter speed- 1/6
aperture- f6.3

Feedback:
The exercise 4a while conforms to a degree with regard to composition is extremely poor in terms of exposure.

Reflection:
~Experience : Through both exercise, I found that work in a group was fun and I enjoy it. Because we could share our result and techniques by different modal of DSLR. During the exercise, I experienced  that you must change ISO, aperture, and shutter speed fast while you taking a picture. Furthermore, I had learnt new thing, composition. Composition was something like a art of photography, sometimes even tell us a story. On exercise 4a, I asked my course mate to be my model. I felt sorry for them because they need to stand at there for few minutes to let me change the setting and capture it. After these few exercise, I found that I had know more and function it well about my camera. I am so glad about it.

~Observation: From previous exercise, I had observed some part of this subject were related to another subject like fundamental drawing and principle of design. Moreover, I had observed that to capture a nice image you must be quick in changing ISO, aperture and shutter speed. While doing the exercise, I realise that using a tripod was better than without tripod. Because if you are doing without tripod, it is not fixed and easily change place, and then the light meter changed. If you are using tripod is better, because everything would be fixed easily.

~Findings: From the first exercise until now, I felt that I am improving although was not improving a lot but still little by little. I am so glad and proud of it, because last time for me is like just using a auto mode camera focus it and then capture it, no worries at all. But for now I had a hard time to capture a image by using manual mode DSLR, I am poor at technical things like the function of manual mode DSLR and anything that related to IT. Through all the exercise, I was able to function it well when using manual mode DSLR and I enjoy while capturing image.
